How Does It All Work?
The Wise Energy Online Monitoring Solution (WEOMS) consists of three components that together create a complete monitoring system that provides you the information and details about your energy usage.
First is the monitoring hardware itself. These are the components that connect to your electric service panel to monitor the amount of power flowing through the lines.
Next is the communications link. This piece provides the connectivity from the monitoring hardware to the Internet so that the power use data can be reported and saved.
Finally, our WEO Dashboard, which does all the work to gather, calculate and display the information.
These individual components are brought together to give you a single cohesive tool to monitor and manage your energy use so that you can make the decisions necessary to control your energy use and save money on your energy bill.
What Are Current Transducers (CT's)?
A current transducer or CT is a little donut like component that goes around a wire to measure the amount of current that is flowing through it. These little components are slipped over the wires on specific circuits within your electric service panel and the other end is connected to the power monitoring unit that reads and records these values.
There are 2 basic types of CT's; split & solid. The split CT's hinge open to allow you to place them onto the wire without disconnecting anything. These split CT's are generally used for the main power feed as this is usually a very thick and hard to disconnect cable. The solid CT's, as the name implies, are solid and the wire to be monitored must be disconnected so that the CT can be slipped over the wire.
The proper CT must be selected for the circuit being monitored. The main criteria for CT selection is the maximum amount of current to be measured and the physical size of the wire. The vast majority of appliances can be monitored using the Micro-40 CT, which is a solid core CT. Any circuit or appliance that has a breaker above 40 Amps, or a wire diameter greater than 1/4" will need a larger sized CT. This would typically be appliances such as Air Handlers, Air Conditioning Compressors and some Ranges.
